Hello everyone!

I am a 1994-98 batch alumnus of electrical &
electronics engg (EEE)& am currently pursuing my MBA.
I was with TVS Electronics previously.

I do agree with Arun Cavale that speaker sessions are
a good way to build student-alumni contact. They offer
alumni an ideal way to remain connected with the alma
matar and also give them access to fresh talent.

For students, this will be an excellent opportunity to
meet with and learn from the experiences of the alumni
and this would hopefully help them better understand
the current trends and requirements in the industry
and hence enable them to make better informed career
decisions.

Also, it gives them access to their own people who are
already active in their targetted industry/field and
this can certainly prove to be an advantage in our
competitive world where "who you know" is probably
becoming more relevant than just "what you know"!

It is therefore a very good means for them to seek
help and advice.

It will be great if the IAA in partnership with the
college/ dept management can get this going. Kudos to
Arun for sticking his neck out and I'm sure the others
too will be willing to share their experiences with
the current batch at BMS.

Let me end this rather long mail with a note to Arun
(& others like him who "crossed over" into
management):
While it may be true that Kinematics, Thermodynamics,
Kirchoff's laws and Electromagnetic fields have given
way to Porter's forces, NPV & Discounted cash flow
analysis, Hedge ratio's and
interest-exchange-inflation rate theories, I still
think it will be very useful if you do interact with
the current engg students in addition to the MBA batch
at BMS as you will bring in the BE-MBA perspective and
also be a good source of info (& I dare say a "reality
check"!)for those looking to follow in your footsteps!

Hope this program gets the support of the rest of the
team and does start soon.

Thanks & Warm Regards,

Anand.

Hello,

I can go to BMSCE on any day between May 11 and May 14 to give a talk on general or specific subjects. I’m currently working in the Computer  Science field, so I would prefer giving a general talk to all students about wireless networks and security issues. I have lost touch with EE since 1996.

I will send my CV later. I prefer not to share my photograph – is this OK?

BMSCE IAA

B.M.S. College of Engineering, International Alumni Association

BMSCE IAA embrace the fact that today’s students are tomorrow’s Alumni

BMSCE IAA by TEAM effort reaching out to BMS ALUMNI’s across

ALL BATCHES and ALL YEARS and ALL DEPARTMENTS.

Together Everyone Achieves More ” TEAM “

ABOUT IAA….

IAA Bangalore Committee has emphasized the importance of BMSCE-IAA and how it is different from other alumni associations in its approach and objectives. IAA has reitrated the necessity of accelerating the efforts to achieve the goals.
IAA aims to be more proactive than other existing alumni associations. As we not only aspire to offer scholarships to deserving students, but also wish to conduct technical seminars, Talks and paper presentations on a regular basis apart from carrier – higher learning counseling and Job placement information.

IAA will be working with all the Departments HOD’s and Staff. Now IAA has assigned IAA members to different departments to work and to gather information of all Departments.

IAA is working with BMSCE Mountaineering Club “BMSCEMC” and planning to work with other BMS Students Associations existing at different departments at BMSCE.

IAA Moto……..

The alumni owes it to their alma mater to come back and interact with students.

Through IAA , alumni can discharge their obligation towards their college.

Alumni’s to take sense of pride and responsibility for doing these things in IAA.

IAA CAN DO ………

IAA / ALUMNI can help and guide students at the college.

IAA / ALUMNI can become MENTOR and we all can share the knowledge with students.

IAA / ALUMNI can arrange for your companies to go to college.

IAA / ALUMNI can give monthly classes in different subjects at college.

IAA / ALUMNI can help students who can’t afford to pay the fees of college.

IAA / ALUMNI can establish scholarships and assistantships for students at college.

IAA / ALUMNI can help the students in coming up.

IAA / ALUMNI can invite students from college to visit companies to understand the working conditions of different companies.

IAA / ALUMNI can visit the campus and share thoughts with Faculty and Students.

IAA / ALUMNI can help it’s alma mater by giving suggestions and recomendations on improvements of it’s website, different departments and other usefull information to make our alma mater a known educational institution all around the world.

IAA / ALUMNI can work with departments and promote it.

IAA / ALUMNI can help in developing the laboratories.

IAA / ALUMNI can help the departments by procuring latest softwares.

IAA / ALUMNI can help in tieing up with some industries for Industry-Institute Interaction.

IAA / ALUMNI can help the depatment libraries (Bysubscribing some magazines, Books etc.,)

IAA / ALUMNI can help by conducting the work shops for faculty and students on latest advancements in the technology.

IAA / ALUMNI can come and give Lectures for students on latest technologies.

IAA / ALUMNI can help in doing the following (suggestions from HOD):

HODs are not in a position to convince and obtain grants for the developmental plans of their departments. For eg.,

a) Issuing merit certificates to TEN TOPPERS in each semester.

b) In addition , issue certificates to Ten toppers of Seventh semester on aggregate basis (aggregate from 1 to 7 semester) plus a farewell party.

c) Now a days ( almost one decade ) farewell partys are given by the 2, 4 and 6 Semester students by making collections of Rs.100/-, Rs.100/- and Rs 50/- respectively. Whatever be the shortfall will be made good by the HOD and his faculty. This practice is true for ECE, CSE and ISE departments.

Further in ECE department has introduced a Incentive scheme for Teachers from 2002 onwards. This is to give a Merit Certificate and a Cash award of Rs.1000/- to the teacher in whose course /subject more than 80% students score more than 80% marks excluding Internal Assesment marks (class marks).

Hello Fellow ALUMNI’s

The following are some of the important information from previous IAA meetings that you all need to know and take further actions in IAA.

In IAA meetings,  IAA Bangalore Committee, President Dr. Kalgal emphasized the importance of BMSCE-IAA and how it is different from other alumni associations in its approach and objectives. He reitrated the necessity of accelerating our efforts to achieve the goals. (It is happenning now. IAA is helping in seminars. Goals and Mission of IAA has been clearly conveyed to BMSCE Principal, BMSCE Management, Most of the HOD’s know about IAA.)

He also said that, IAA aims to be more proactive than other existing alumni associations. As we not only aspire to offer scholarships to deserving students, but also wish to conduct technical seminars, Talks and paper presentations on a regular basis apart from carrier – higher learning counseling and Job placement information. (Job Placement of IAA is helping BMS Students and it is well liked by all at BMSCE. Scholarships will be announced in IAA.)

Further he told that, IAA will be working with all the Departments HOD’s and Staff. Then IAA assigned IAA members to different departments to work and to gather information.

(This is taking place in different departments now. It is gathering momentum. IAA needs cooperation from HOD’s and Staff.)

The following are some the actions of IAA that are planned to reach out to students.

MENTORING PROGRAM.

· Career counseling
· Guidance forFurther studies
· Preparation for campus interview
· Helping out with projects

The first step will be a mock test to be conducted. These are the tasks that need to be carried out.

· Formulation of the question papers.
· Permission from the principal to conduct the same. (This is done)
· Awareness through posters, word of mouth and departments. (This was done during UTSAV 2004. All Departments have IAA Posters. Need to do on regular basis.)
· Meeting to decide on the particulars of the same.

Mock interviews and seminars held by more experienced members/non-members.

Thus the need to rope in more alumni from earlier years

Conducting of test/s along with the placement cell. (BMSCE Placement Officer has agreed for this.)

Other issues, topics and ideas were:

· Having 2 representatives from each class
· Finance
· e-mentoring
· Melton group
· Spreading IAA awareness

The following is the action plan of IAA.  This is taken at an IAA meeting.

Setting the question papers: Aptitude and technical papers.

Permission from the principal of BMSCE to conduct the same.

(This has been done and BMSCE Management has agreed for this and IAA can use the PLACEMENT Room)

Awareness. Reach out to students of 6th semester through HOD’s and students. Also making posters and pamphlets for the same.

Vision – “To make BMS the best non-IIT institution in the nation by 2010”

This VISION was suggested by one BMS ALUMNI currently in USA

Let us work together in IAA.

State of BMSCE: A message to BMSCEIAA and BMSCE from an ALUMNI in 2004

Dear Kumaraswamy:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I was out of town and away from email for a few days.  I am not really sure I understand all the factors that may have contributed to the decline in the quality of students and the quality of education at BMSCE. I suspect it has to do in part with the uncontrolled proliferation of Engineering colleges in Karnataka,  difficulty of recruiting qualified and dedicated faculty (especially at a time when industrial opportunities are abundant for those who have a strong academic record) and the competition among many colleges to attract the best students. Clearly, the students who are complaining so loudly would have gotten into a better institution than BMSCE if only they had the credentials necessary to do so.

There are some rather simple things that BMSCE administration could (and should) do to improve its image. BMSCE needs a professional looking web page – one that provides information about the credentials of its faculty, qualifications of the incoming class, performance of BMSCE students in university-wide exams, placement data about its alumni. It needs an external advisory board – made of industrial and academic leaders – including its own alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers after graduating from BMSCE. Lastly, BMSCE needs to focus on quality, and not quantity – and do whatever it can to attract the best qualified students. And it needs to hire the best qualified faculty – if necessary, by offering salaries and work environments that are competitive with those offered by competing institutions (e.g., the  IITs). The institution needs to maintain good relations with the alumni and set up an aggressive, professionally managed, independently audited, fundraising campaign (as opposed to collecting “donations” which are in effect bribes for admitting students with questionable credentials). The institution’s revenues, budgets, and expenditure should be made a matter of the public record so that there is no room for corruption or underhanded deals. If the college administration and management are willing to take these steps, things will begin to change for the better. Honestly, while my educational experience in BMSCE was wonderful (thanks largely to dedicated faculty and my classmates), even during my time, there were plenty of problems with the college administration. The behavior of the administrative and laboratory staff left a lot to be desired. . Please feel free to pass this on to the administration if you think it would be helpful. All of this is commonsense – so I am sure the administration has heard this before.

I would like to help, but at this juncture, given the other demands on my time, the best way for me to help would be to work with a small group of my friends and classmates to achieve something tangible – e.g., setting up a scholarship. I am pursuing this, and I hope to see it realized by next year. As for getting involved in a more significant way, if I see some tangible evidence that the college administration is serious about improving the quality of education offered by BMSCE, I would be happy to help by doing my bit.

My home number is 515 292 4574. I am usually difficult to get hold of at home. Email is probably the best way to reach me.

Regards,

Vasant Honavar

Hello. I graduated from BMSCE in the 1980s. I can’t speak for what BMSCE is like today. But my classmates and I received a very good education at BMSCE during our time. BMSCE at that time offered only undergraduate degrees. Most faculty who taught us did not have Ph.D.s. although some completed their Ph.D. later. Despite that, we had some excellent teachers – SRK, DVL, PSS, Alasingar, HNM to name a few – teachers who loved to teach, teachers who were very knowledgeable about the material they taught, and were an inspiration to us. That does not mean that every teacher that we had was of the same caliber as the ones I mentioned. We had a couple that did not measure up. But all in all, we had good teachers. BMSCE students used to do quite well in the university-wide examinations, especially in Electronics (EC) and Electrical Engineering (EE) branches. BMSCE students routinely used to show up close to the top of the graduating class in EE and EC tracks in Bangalore university. A sizeable fraction of the graduating class in EC and EE from BMSCE would get into decent US universities with assistantship offers. Several of my friends and I came to the US for graduate studies after finishing my BE at BMSCE – it was the thing to do before the economy and IT industry in India began to take off in the 1990s. We found that the education we had received as undergraduates in BMSCE had prepared us well for graduate study. One of the most useful courses that I took at BMSCE as an undergraduate student was a course on Probability, Random Variables, and Information theory taught by PSS using based a text authored by Papoulis. SRK and DVL could teach anything and make it interesting and fun. And we had some good mathematics professors – RP and HN.  I have no knowledge of the situation in BMSCE now, but if I were to believe what I am reading from some of the more recent graduates, it appears that BMSCE is not what it used to be which was arguably among the top two Engineering colleges in Bangalore University. If that is the case, it is rather sad. I hope the students, faculty, administration, and alumni can work together to turn things around for the better.

Dear All:

Its been a long time since I emailed. For those of you who joined
into BMSCEIAA after April, this is Meena 94-98 Telecom batch. I have
been an active participant for BMSCIAA but was unable to participate
for the last two months 'coz I relocated to Minnesota from Detroit
and took me quite sometime to move my computer here. Anywayz, I am
back into action now! :D

I am really happy that UTSAV was such a big success. Thank you very
much for all your responses. However, I do not see any activity on
the discussion forum even tho I have logged on after 2 wholemonths! I
expected to see a lot of emails and a lot o topics what with 1000 and
odd members now at the BMSCEIAA! The whole purpose of the discussion
forum is lost! I would definitely encourage and urge people to use
the discussion forum more than the yahoo groups in future! Please
post all your opinions on the discusson forum in future.
